While looking for beach front property in 2004, Shamus stumbled upon Laguna de Apoyo. He instantly fell in love with the clean, clear, warm waters of Lake Apoyo that are believed to have healing properties from the Apoyo Volcano that imploded over 20,000 years ago. Laguna de Apoyo had the seclusion Shamus wanted yet was still accessible enough to the rest of the world.

In 2008 Richard Hewitt, Dave Dunsmore and Shamus Hewitt conceived and built Apoyo Lodge in Laguna de Apoyo Nicaragua. Their aim was to create a laid back Canadian cottage feel.  Two years in, Apoyo Lodge is constantly working to improve and create a truly unique experience here in Nicaragua.
